Lentil and bean sprouts

Lentil sprouts

This isn’t a crafts or DIY post, but it isn’t a recipe either. It’s just about how to make your own bean sprouts out of dried pulses. Nothing too clever, but quite useful to know. They’re really nice in salads and don’t have that funny taste shop-bought soya beansprouts sometimes have.

All you need is some dried pulses of your choice (I used mixed beans and green lentils), a glass jar, and some cloth to cover it up. Although you’re supposed to use muslin cloth, I didn’t have any at home and just used cotton fabric (bits of an old t-shirt), and it worked fine. It basically needs to be breathable and preferably cotton.

Make sure if you choose lentils or peas they’re whole ones and not split.

I just soaked the lentils and beans in water overnight. Then, I rinsed them and placed them in a jar (don’t fill it up too much as the sprouts will take up more space, I’d say about half or 2/3 full should be fine). Then I cut a bit of fabric and attached it to the top of the jar with a rubber band. I placed them by the window and waited.

You’re meant to rinse them off a few times a day to get rid of the thick liquid thing that comes out. Do it at least 3 times a day. You can rinse them off without taking the cloth cover off.

This is what they looked like on the first day:

By the end of the 2nd day, some of them had started sprouting:

Third day:

Ready (I like them quite crunchy, but you can wait a few more days until they’ve sprouted more than this):
